Preseason Local Memphis Area Rankings:
For the first time in
local school history there will be two private schools
that will ranked in the Top 3 in preseason polls. They
are listed below and if you are a loyal MemphisHoopers
fan you will remember the story on the Brentwood Academy
ruling (2003) and it is hitting home with full swing on the
private school sector scene. two usual area powers
Raleigh Egypt and Ridgeway hold respectively, Manassas
ever first preseason rankings is a new for the area.
A private school holds the preseason ranking, a first
for the area and will kick dust all the ay to the eat
side of the State.
Preseason Local Memphis Area High School Rankings:
1.
St. George's
- Highly ranked Elliot
Williams has taken his game to another level, Lawrence
Bowers will be vital, is Elliston in the mix.
Terico White's maybe transfer would really solidify as a
nationwide team but his decision to stay at Craigmont
changes the landscape.
2.
Ridgeway
- Martino Brock's stay
for his senior season and Jason Jones awesome ability
will once again give Wes Henning another strong team in
AAA, never know who else will step up to the plate in
the process.
3.
Briarcrest
- Leslie McDonald will lead this with one of the best
supporting casts in the state, how they mesh will make
the difference even though they have been together for
years, you are at that age where it can go from 'sugar
to shit'.
4.
Raleigh Egypt
- North Memphis kids are more hard knocked than South
Memphis teams, why 'you tell me'. Veteran Coach Jimmy
Adams will be back for another season in limited school
capacity as he retires from the school system but still
coaches the team, got to give it to him (Jimmy Adams)
has those kids prepared to the fullest at all times.
always a strong class in the pipeline, not like other
schools like Hamilton where there is nothing in the
pipeline as sights view.
5.
Manassas
- A ditto of Mitchell when they rebuilt that school and
it transformed into a area school icon, Manassas has a
new school and one the best classes in school history.
They boast a strong returning class that includes Roy
McFagdon plus the likes of Westside star studded junior
class led by Derrick Richards..

Private School Making a Mark on the
Area Basketball Scene:
Last
time a private school made some noise with a player to
go on play Division 1 ball was John Wilfong from
Briarcrest. He went on to an illustrious career at
University of Memphis. Now we have not one but two
private high schools in Briarcrest and St. George's in
the preseason high school rankings. They are recognized
more state wide and nationally then locally, reason why
is it because of the influx of East Tennessee politics.
You ever look at polls during the high school basketball
season,
e.g.
Mitchell when they had that star studded class they were
never ranked in the Top Ten during the season AP poll
and only twice did they crack the Top Ten even thought
they went to the TSSAA State Tournament 3 out of 4
years.
The ruling several
years involving Brentwood Academy on scholarships
available to student athletes is much visible and at
work (full strength) in the Memphis area with 7 out of
10 kids ranked going to school in the private sector.
The million dollar question is, "can the private school
sector keep the momentum in their favor". Remember this
is Memphis and things work a little different here
compadres. For now all high school coaches know it is an
major impact on their program and can mean long term
effects if they don't adjust.

Area Players make noise as first
rounders in Thursday's draft in New York:
For
the second year in a row, Memphis has multiple players
going to the NBA via Memphis or from here originally.
Thaddeus Young went 12th to the Philadelphia 76ers and
Derrick Byars picked by Portland but traded to
Philadelphia for a total Memphis home grown flavor to
the draft overall.

MUS Tournament Recap: Another
great local tournament that is an annual icon to the
high school level. The two teams that really stood out
were Manassas and CBHS. Wait a minute before everyone is
set on Briarcrest and St. George's in the top two of
that district, CBHS can easily be number 1. This will be
the toughest division among all area high schools
including AA and AAA. A should be dominated by Manassas
whom should garner 25 or more wins in this upcoming
basketball seasons.

Early Registration News from the Area:
As
earlier report that Treadwell was closing was wrong as
Treadwell and the city's leading scorer Tonye Smith will
stay and Kingsbury loses in the sweepstakes. Valpraiso
commit Eric Buggs whom practiced with East all summer
changes his mind and attends Mitchell who he always
mentioned at first. First year Coach Gibson of East will
have a young squad with some great athletes.
Sampson Carter of Hamilton is a no show and maybe headed
to the private school sector. Remember schools if your
school is on the State Fail High School List with the
state your child can transfer with no sitting out
clauses. That's what Arnette Moultrie did, you think
Harold Johnson (Trezevant) let that slide that easy.
Carver is in the same boat with their Riverview stud
going to Central, Bradsher is sick. Memphis Stallions
coached by Coach Paige and Harrell made it all the way
to the championship game of 14 Under AAU Nationals.
Farrakhon Hall goes to White Station and teams up with
Joe Jackson, just when everyone thought the Spartans
were thru. Westwood hires Coach Brown from Jackson,
Tennessee, he coached Wille Kemp (AAU) when he was 9 and
10 years old.
