          Recap 11-19-2005

Ridgeway @  Mitchell

The third meeting between these two schools in the last three years, all Hall of fame Games with Mitchell never winning none of the meetings. Tied 17 all with 4:11 left in the second half both teams are vying for a major victory early in the season. Ridgeway coming off a strong win at rival Northside under first year coach Tamie Currie and future playoff foe for the state tournament.

After 7 ties and 6 lead changes in the first half and with Ridgeway leading 28-26 at the half, the second half will definitely guarantee an exciting finish for both teams. Senior Lekendra Phillips led all scorers in the first half with 11 points and Sprouse led Mitchell with 10 points. Mithcell committed 20 turnovers in the first half, 5 apiece on Andrea Holmes and Shonice Sprouse and that is the difference in the game. Mitchell shot over 60% in the half and that is what kept them above water to offset the turnovers.

The third quarter started all Ridgeway as they outscored Mitchell 10-3 to start the quarter and extend their lead to the largest of the game, 8 points at 38-30 at the 4:23 mark of the third quarter. As the game seemed to slip away from Mitchell the Lady Tigers would not surrender as they garnered a run of their own 10-2 to tie and take the lead for the first time in the third quarter to finish the third quarter on top 42-40 after it looked like the Lady Roadrunners were about to blow the game wide open. Tenacious defense by Mitchell in the final 4 minutes after a timeout from Mitchell coach Harold Wooten at the 4:02 mark of the third quarter.

Fourth quarter is going to be real barnburner (sounds country, don't it) with the gym filled to capacity, fire marshals on hand to turn all other readily spectators away, this game will go down to the wire and that it did. This was a game of runs with very aggressive defense that sparked the runs for both sides. Ridgeway ended the game on a 10-2 run to take 57-51 lead but the Tigers once again stepped it up on defense to narrow the lead to 58-56 with just under 20 seconds but came up short on a long three from Sprouse.

Senior LaKendra Phillips led Ridgeway with 21 points and with some major steals that were crucial to the Tigers defeat. Junior Danae Lawrence added 10 points on hand. Mitchell was led in scoring by senior Shonice Sprouse (24 pts., 9 rebounds and 8 steals). Sophomore Andrea Holmes chipped in 12 pts., 6 rebounds, 6 steals and 5 assists.
