HAMILTON 2013-2014

In only his second year and at the same time on his second stint with Hamilton High School. Coach Keelon Lawson is back just as strong as he was when we left his alma mater in 2008 with a state championship and a record setting 39-0 clip for the the 2006 high school basketball season. A TSSAA record and only the second time in Memphis history a team went undefeated the entire season. Hamilton's enrollment is back in high numbers at 1,200 students from earlier school year accords with a new energy in the iconic South Memphis High School. Coach Lawson brings a super major boost to a Memphis iconic high school that has a lot of basketball tradition in his highly and nationally ranked kids in K.J. Lawson and Detric Lawson. Hamilton is back in the mix, not only a candidate for 16-AAA but the toughest district in the state, hands down. but a state contender as well. Only three years ago Hamilton won 5 basketball games the entire year and MemphisHoopers.com staff definitely had them at the bottom of District 16-AAA. The Wildcats are definitely and for some years to come.

Junior K.J. Lawson (6'7 - 200 lbs., espn - 2015 - #21 - Memphis commit) had an extraordinary summer season with Team Penny reaching the Peach Jam Final Four after going 4-1 in final session to just qualify. The versatile and very crafty penetrator with his great ball handling skills, court vision, and plays all positions with great skill set accordingly! He is just an all around special player who everyone in Memphis via nationally will hear about all season long in the toughest district in the state hands down (District 16-AAA). Lawson also rebounds the ball very well as being second in the city last year respectively plus use of both hands has been treacherous on defenses with a scorers mentality coming at you on every possession.

His younger brother, sophomore Dedric Lawson (6'8.5 - 205 lbs., espn - 2016 - #4) also had an extremely great summer circuit season with Team Penny. Especially in the month of July capturing a championship in Las Vegas at Fab 48 with a win over D.C. Assault and a strong showing earlier in the month at Peach Jam. His confidence is in line for a great showing in one of the toughest districts in the state and a state run at the title. The younger Lawson led the city in rebounding last year and is poised for another strong showing in that department including his passing abilities and blocking shots accordingly. Senior Tyren Collier (6'3 - 185 lbs., rivals #) a three year starter whose awesome athletic ability around the rim is just as good as anyone in the city with his high flying reel in motion. good spot up shooter from all over the court and also can hit the boards in strong fashion while playing the guard position at times in many ball games.

Senior Chreshean Brown (6'1 - 180 lbs., rivals #) will play at the number spot and can handle all defenses that will brought against him from district counterparts as his good defense will bother other team guards intensively. Brown great court vision will translate into many assists with targets as the Lawson's on the end of many of those passes.  Another senior Calvin Bouting (6'3 - 210 lbs., rivals #) who will bring that football toughness right off the field and is an exceptional rebounder using his body in text book form.

Junior Terrance Birdsong (6'7 - 230 lbs., rivals #) with a man child body will set the paint right and set up other teammates with his around the rim activity. Last year the question was can they handle other teams guard play, not the question this year.

Hamilton will not participate in any Hall of Fame games respectively or it's usual calendar event, The Martin Luther King Tournament. Instead of MLK they will travel to Dallas, Texas November 27-28, 2013 and face Emmanuel Mudiay of  Prime Prep Academy. Month of December they start off with a trip up north to the windy city for a battle against national power Chicago Simeon Academy. They finish December with a trip to Bristol, Tennessee for the 31st Annual Arby's Classic that has fielded many players to go onto the next level respectively. The Wildcats finish off their non district travel schedule with a trip to Dyer County to participate in the Penny Hardaway Classic to face off with national perennial power Oak Hill Academy.

Sophomores Demonte Pearson (6'0 - 185 lbs., rivals #) is going to play the combo guard in different situations relentlessly with Pearson playing the number 1 spot at times. Romero Hill (6'3 - 185 lbs., rivals #) is a good spot up shooter from all over the court and also can hit the boards in strong fashion while playing the guard position at times in many ball games.

Recap 8-25-2005

BY : ANDRE WHITEHEAD OF TENNESSEE PREP HOOPS

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. I think there is a book that starts off that way, but I digress.

The anticipation of the upcoming AAU or summer campaign was alive and kicking all over the country in May of 2005, especially in Memphis.

The expectations seemed enormous, having finished second in the 17 and under nationals last season as 16's the Memphis YOMCA seemed primed for the ultimate run.

Something happened on the way to the gym.

It was apparent the Bluff City faithful were not the only parties interested in getting a piece of the star studded squad.

Adidas wanted to get a foothold in the ever burgeoning Memphis hoop scene and this seemed to be the initial move to start this particular ball
rolling.

So the YOMCA was no longer in the loop and the Memphis Pump-N-Run were officially born.

TTaking a peek at the roster one could not blame Adidas for their bold move. Thaddeus Young, Willie Kemp, Wayne Chism, Pierre Niles and Brandon Powell made up a nucleus that would surely lead Team Memphis to the promised land.

The summer campaign started with a most interesting scenario as the "PNR" lost a game to the Mid-State Ballerz, who ironically had Willie Kemp running the show. This was an illusion that would soon change, as Kemp
shortly thereafter joined the PNR.

With all their ducks in a row, the PNR set out to establish themselves and put a benchmark on the national attention that would follow.

The Real Deal on the Hill, the first major tournament of the summer that coaches could attend. The pundits pined for the impending matchup between Team Memphis and the defending mythical goliath The Indy Spiece Heat. The Heat were led by the consensus top player in the class Greg Oden and numerous other high level prospects who could actually match the
PNR with name recognition.br>
The reputation was established and the aura of the PNR was created as the boys from Memphis soundly defeated the Heat and made a huge cry across the land as the best summer squad in existence.

Another funny thing happened on the way to their future endeavors, nothing.

For some inexplicable reason the PNR did not suit up for any of the Memorial Day festivities and was sparsely seen until the Adidas Super 64 in Atlanta, following the shoe camps.

The aforementioned players participated in various high level exposure camps and the three major shoe camps and kept their names on the tongues of coaches nationwide.

After achieving individual success at these various camps, the boys got back together with the purpose of putting the finishing touches on a grand and final run through the top programs the country had to offer. They added Ridgeway jumping jack Ernest Fields and ECS powerhouse Tim Johnson to the fold and things looked bright.

Once again a funny thing happened on the way to the gym.

The time off and the lack of continuity played havoc on the chemistry of the PNR and they bowed out early in Atlanta.

Heading to Las Vegas for the final big time event of the summer, the PNR seemed poised and ready to achieve. After dominating pool play the lack of chemistry once again reared it's ugly head and some resentment among the players seemed to end this summer campaign on a sour note.

This team had the potential to be one of the best of all time. It is truly unclear what precipitated these events that grounded this team for much of the latter portion of May and June, but it truly had it's effect on their success.

None the less these kids are part of the best class of seniors to dot the Tennessee landscape in many years.

The decision to completely disassociate themselves with the
organization that they grew up playing for in retrospect now seems like a mistake. The YOMCA will continue on with quality younger teams and what to make of the Adidas affiliation with the Bluff City at this juncture is
unclear.
