Tournament of Champions
OK, let's be honest:
Maurice Miller
probably hoped for a better spring than he's
been able to deliver. Held back by a team that
lacks star talent around him and some tough
individual match ups that have made him appear
less quick than once believed, Miller showed
renewed vigor on Saturday. He didn't light up
the game we watched, but the 6-1 PG was able to
get to the basket for buckets and fouls, and he
also made lots of unselfish plays that impressed
us as acts of principle, even if he realized
that he teammate in question may not finish the
play. Miller absolutely thinks and plays the
game the right way, and that's a great way to
curry favor with coaches.
In the process he made the All Tournament Team

June 5, 2006 RECAP
AAU State @ Bishop
Byrne
News and notes from the 17 and
under state.
The finals of the 17 and under
state tournament commenced with an outstanding battle
between the Memphis Tigers and the Mid-State Ballerz
Elite. The Tigers got an NBA range 3-pointer at the
buzzer from
Broderick Gilcrest (Hamilton) to force
overtime and then Gilcrest and
William Green (Fairley)
dropped bombs and the Memphis Tigers slipped by the
Ballerz 78-74.
The Tigers led by double digits at the half before the
Ballerz closed the gap and took the lead late in the
contest. The Ballerz got inspired play from Jewon Long
(Liberty), who despite an injury came to play on Sunday.
Long was unable to make the trip until the final day but
his presence made a huge difference for the Ballerz in
their semi-final victory over the Memphis YOMCA and the
finals loss to the Tigers. Kevin Smith (Riverdale) and
Catarious Taylor (Brighton) played well for the Ballerz
the entire weekend.
Myron Strong (Hamilton) and his teammate Gilcrest proved
to all in attendance that they are among the state's
best in the backcourt. Also playing well for the Tigers
was Green, Donald Harris (Hamilton) and Josh Street
(Craigmont).
Green played well the entire weekend including a last
second three to push the Tigers over the Tennessee
Thunder and a date with the Ballerz in the final.
In the consolation game the Tennessee Thunder defeated
the Memphis YOMCA behind Wil Peters (White's Creek),
Matt Harris (Brentwood) and playing well on Sunday was
Michael McAdoo (Antioch), who returned to action after a
serious mouth injury. The YOMCA finished Saturday as the
only unbeaten team before losing twice on Sunday. Ricky
Taylor (Haywood County) was sterling all weekend from
all over the floor.
Despite missing a majority of their roster due to injury
the Mid-State Ballerz Elite 16's defeated the Nashville
Stallions to capture the 5th place spot. The Elite were
missing the services of Tyrone Caldwell, Kevin Giltner,
Latavious Williams, Rayshawn Walker and Justin Hearn.
Tyshaun Edmondson (Kentucky) was especially solid
including a 45 point effort on Saturday. The Stallions
played hard all weekend using tough effort and team play
to stay in every game. The Stallions got solid effort
from Demond Craig (Mt. Juliet) who led them from the
lead guard spot all tourney.
The Mid-State Ballerz Seelct captured the seventh place
game with a victory over the Franklin Rage. The Select
had superb effort from Markeese Curry (Jackson
Southside) and Corey Payne (Mt. Juliet). The Select had
the distinction of being the only team that defeated the
Tigers the entire weekend.
